Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research EconomicsOUR STORY
We’re Kate and Andrew Gordon, co-founders of Waylo.
After spending time helping young people in our community practise driving, we began to notice something. Learning to drive was heavily focused on accumulating hours and ultimately passing a test, but far less attention was being paid to the breadth of experience young drivers were getting along the way.
Different roads. Different conditions. Night driving. Rain. Busy traffic. Unfamiliar routes. The situations they’ll actually face once they’re driving alone.
The more we looked into road safety and the risks facing young drivers, the more important that gap felt.
So we created Waylo.
Our mission is simple: help young drivers build broader, better driving experience before they have to face the road alone.
WHY IT MATTERS
people aged 17–25 lost their lives on the roads in 2024.
Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economicspeople died in crashes in 2024 where a driver aged 16–24 was at fault.

The countries publish different measures, so these figures are presented individually and should not be added together as though they are identical datasets.
THE WIDER COST
The human cost is what matters most. But road trauma also carries an enormous cost for families, communities and society.
Official transport appraisal frameworks place the social cost of a road fatality at approximately A$9.86 million in Australia, NZ$14.38 million in New Zealand, and £2.53 million in Great Britain.

Those figures reflect the broader human, health, economic and societal impact of lives lost and serious road trauma.
For us, they reinforce a simple idea: anything that can help young drivers become better prepared for the road is worth pursuing.
Safer, more confident young drivers for whatever’s down the road.
