Privacy policy.
Waylo helps learner drivers, parents and supervisors build broader real-world driving experience. This policy explains the personal information we collect, why we use it and the choices available to you when using Waylo in New Zealand.
Information we collect
- Account information such as your name, email address, mobile number and account settings.
- Learner information you provide, including learner name, learner-licence information, home area or address and driving-related profile information.
- Location and route information while a learner drive is active. If you allow background location, Waylo may continue recording that active drive while the app is in the background or the phone is locked.
- Driving-experience information derived from recorded drives, such as roads, traffic, conditions and driving situations encountered.
- Invitation and linked-account information when a learner invites a parent or supervisor, or a parent or supervisor invites a learner.
- Referral or instructor information where you choose to use those features.
How we use information
We use this information to operate Waylo, create and link learner and supervisor accounts, record learner drives, build the learner's experience profile, provide recommendations, send requested invitations and service messages, support users, protect the service and improve the product.
Linked learner, parent and supervisor accounts
A learner may create their own learner profile and invite a parent or supervisor. A parent or supervisor may also create a learner profile and invite the learner. Linked users can access the same learner experience record according to their role and permissions. Information entered into a shared learner record may therefore be visible to other people linked to that learner.
Location information
Waylo uses precise location while a learner drive is in progress so it can record the route and identify relevant driving experience. Background location is used only to allow an active drive to continue recording when Waylo is not in the foreground. You can change location permissions in your device settings.
Conversation feedback and microphone access
Conversation feedback is optional and only operates when the required participants have enabled it. When active, Waylo uses on-device speech recognition to identify limited driving-related conversation patterns. Waylo does not save or upload audio recordings or conversation transcripts for this feature. Interim speech text is processed transiently on the device and only limited derived feedback is held in app memory for the post-drive experience.
Service providers and overseas processing
We use service providers for cloud hosting, authentication, mapping, routing, analytics and communications. Some providers may process or store information outside New Zealand. Where New Zealand privacy law applies, we take reasonable steps to ensure overseas handling is consistent with applicable privacy requirements, including the safeguards reflected in the Privacy Act 2020.
Young people and families
Waylo is designed for learner drivers who are old enough to hold a New Zealand learner licence, together with parents, guardians and supervisors. Eligible learners may create their own account. Parents and guardians should remain involved where appropriate for the learner's age and circumstances.
Retention and account deletion
We retain information for as long as your account is active or as reasonably needed to provide Waylo, maintain shared learner records and meet legal obligations. Where account deletion is available in the app, you can use that feature or contact us for help. Deleting one linked user's account may not automatically delete information that remains part of another user's shared learner record where it is still required to provide the service or meet legal obligations.
Your choices and rights
You can update account information in Waylo, change device permissions in your phone settings, turn optional conversation feedback off and ask us for help with your personal information. New Zealand users may also have rights to access and request correction of personal information under the Privacy Act 2020.
