Terms of use.
These terms apply when you use the Waylo app, website and related services in New Zealand. By creating or using a Waylo account, you agree to these terms.
What Waylo does
Waylo helps learner drivers, parents and supervisors understand the breadth of driving experience gained across different roads, conditions, traffic and situations, and may suggest opportunities to build further experience.
Accounts and linked users
A learner who is eligible to hold a New Zealand learner licence may create their own Waylo learner profile and invite a parent or supervisor. A parent or supervisor may also create a learner profile and invite the learner. Linked users may access the same learner experience record according to their role and permissions.
If you provide or manage information about another person, you must have appropriate authority or permission to do so. Parents and guardians should remain involved where appropriate for young users.
New Zealand learner-licence conditions
Waylo does not replace NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi requirements. A learner must comply with the conditions applying to their licence. Current core conditions include:
- A learner licence can be obtained from age 16.
- A learner must have an eligible supervisor sitting beside them whenever they drive.
- L plates must be displayed clearly at the front and rear of the vehicle while the learner is driving.
- The learner must carry their learner licence while driving.
- Passengers may be carried when the supervisor agrees and all learner-licence conditions continue to be met.
- A supervisor must hold a current full New Zealand car licence without a supervisor condition and must generally have held a full New Zealand licence, or an equivalent overseas licence, for at least 2 years.
Until 24 January 2027, the minimum learner period before a restricted-licence test is generally 6 months. From 25 January 2027, learners under 25 generally move to a 12-month learner period, with a pathway back to 6 months through an approved course or logged supervised driving hours. Learners aged 25 or over remain at 6 months. NZTA is still finalising the detailed supervised-hours logging requirements. Always check current NZTA rules before relying on a licensing requirement.
Waylo is not an official licensing record
NZTA recommends around 120 hours of supervised practice before the restricted licence. Waylo helps make that practice broader and more purposeful, but it is not the official supervised-hours record and does not certify hours for licensing purposes unless Waylo expressly confirms otherwise in the future.
Waylo is not a driving instructor or test assessor
Waylo does not replace professional driving instruction, the judgement of a supervising driver or official licensing requirements. It does not certify that a learner is safe, competent, test-ready or ready to drive independently.
Safe use
Do not interact with Waylo while driving. A supervising passenger should operate the app where interaction is needed. You remain responsible for obeying New Zealand road rules, choosing safe routes, responding to current road and weather conditions and deciding whether a suggested drive is appropriate.
Routes and recommendations
Routes, classifications and recommendations are guidance only. Road closures, traffic, weather, map data and local conditions can change. Waylo cannot guarantee that a suggested route will be available, suitable or free from hazards.
Conversation feedback
Conversation feedback is optional. Where available, it operates only when the required participants have chosen to enable it. It provides limited feedback about the supervision conversation and does not assess driving competence or replace professional coaching.
Paid features
If Waylo offers paid subscriptions or other paid features in New Zealand, the applicable price, renewal terms and payment provider will be shown before purchase. Any App Store purchase will also be subject to Apple’s applicable purchase terms.
Availability and changes
We may improve, change or discontinue features as Waylo develops. We aim to provide a reliable service, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free availability.
Intellectual property
Waylo, its branding, software, content and product design are owned by or licensed to Waylo and may not be copied, reproduced or commercially exploited without permission, except as allowed by law.
Liability and consumer rights
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded under New Zealand law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 where it applies. To the extent permitted by law, Waylo is not responsible for losses arising from unsafe driving decisions, reliance on route guidance, inaccurate third-party map or road information, or use of the service contrary to these terms.
